CHICAGO (August 11, 2017)–Members of the Chicago City Council Progressive Reform Caucus on Friday urged Mayor Rahm Emanuel to abandon his recent flirtation with school vouchers and commit to fully funding the Chicago Public Schools.
Mayor Emanuel dodged questions on Thursday about his position on vouchers after private emails indicating his openness to discussing the concept were released to the media earlier this week.
“It should be easy for Mayor Emanuel to reject the concept of school vouchers, which would be the death knell for public education in Chicago, outright,” said Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza (10). “In these harrowing times, we should all be standing shoulder to shoulder in firm opposition to the education agenda of Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump–not opening the door for it.”
The Caucus urged the Mayor to clarify his position on the issue, and pledged to fight any effort to siphon tax dollars away from CPS and into private schools.
The Progressive Reform Caucus of the Chicago City Council is dedicated to creating a more just and equal Chicago, combating all forms of discrimination, and advancing public policies that offer genuine opportunity to all Chicagoans, especially those who have been left out of our society’s prosperity.
The Progressive Reform Caucus includes Ald. Sophia King (4) Ald. Leslie Hairston (5); Ald. Roderick T. Sawyer (6); Ald. Susan Sadlowski Garza (10); Ald. Toni Foulkes (16); Ald. David Moore (17); Ald.
